We have a dual 867 quicksilver at work and it will not boot for anything. It seems like a CPU error (see picture), is a CPU fired, and if so can I run it on one and disable the other. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Try booting from an install disk. If it boots up ok, go to Disk Utility and repair the internal HD. Then repair permissions.

In general, assume it's a software problem until you know otherwise. Software-type problems cost a lot less to fix, and happen more often.

If it is not what reader50 said, I would try swapping RAM next.

Before you do any of that, boot from the Hardware Test CD. If it doesn't boot, or comes up with a processor malfunction, you know there's a hardware issue. If not, you can diagnose knowing that it's a software problem.

Kernal panic! Probably just the hard drive being a bit corrupted. Boot from the OSX intall disk, and repair permissions and disk.

If this don't work run Apple Hardware Test in Loop mode for a few hours. It will give you info about the RAM, graphics and CPUs. You could also run Tech Tool if you have it, or DiskWarrior to check the disk.

Also, open up the case and have a look. If there are any loose components or cables, or dirt, fix it up. Clean out the dirt with compressed air (you can buy this in a can from Radio Shack and the like). Remember to take anti static precautions, and unplug the machine. And check that the CPU fan is running.

Probably the CPU is not fried. If it were truly gone it most likely wouldn't get this far. There is no way to run just one CPU, AFAIK. I imagine it could be possible.

You can try swapping components from another same specced machine.

Also, has anything happened to the machine? Has any hardware been added or removed, or the internals touched? Has any new software been installed?

Hope this helps.
