Hello,

I just got a g3 imac dv 500 - my g4 imac having been stolen a few weeks ago - and the screen brightness is muted. With the brightness control set all the way up general computing work is passable. Watching a dvd is, well, unwatchable as the screen is so dark.

Is there an easily replaced component that would get the original brightness back? Do the crts just fade in time?

Thanks, Steve

that is weird. I have an earlier revision of the same computer and I have no such problem. You might try going into system preferences-->displays-->color-->calibrate, and see what you can do. Otherwise, I would use an external monitor. If getting an external is not practical/feasable, I would just deal with it. There is not much that you can do besides what I have already listed. Actually, come to think of it, you might also check out "universal access" inside of system preferences to see if any display options have been excercized there, too. In a pinch, you could try pressing command+control+option+8 to invert the colors on the screen. This wouldn't help much for movies, but it may add readability when using a web browser or something. I have had CRTs fade in brightness over time. There isn't much you can do.

Thanks. Calibration didn't improve it much. I'll wait and see what kind of insurance settlement I'll get. Those g5 imacs are lookin good...
