I just an iMac DV 400 for my daughter to use for simple internet and school work. I want to load OS X on it but I think you need to upgrade the firmware before you do so. I used to have this one way back when but cannot remember. Is there a way to check the firmware before I load OS 10.4? If it is wrong will it not load? I don't want to make it a paperweight.

Thanks

Easiest thing to do would be to download the last firmware updater avialable from Apple for that model Mac (4.1.9f if I remember correctly) and try installing it. If it isn't needed it will tell you. If it is, it will install.

Alternatively, System Profiler should tell you what the firmware is.

Edit: If you are installing Tiger, you could actually use System Profiler at the start of the installation process to check the firmware version. When you are presented with the first screen on booting from the installer disk, go to the utilities menu and (assuming I remember right) choose system profiler.

There is no OS on the drive at all. Aren't the firmware updaters all for use with OS 9?

Yes, you will need OS 9 (maybe earlier) to install a firmware update on that old a Mac. However, just check what firmware you have installed already - you may not even need to update it (as I said before, it is 4.1.9f for that model iMac). System Profiler is accessible from the installation process, so I would start an install then abort it if you find you don't have the correct firmware or proceed if you do.

Crap, I received the Mac yesterday. It was packed like crap and destroyed in transit. The Mac took a hit in the back, front and side. Broken plastic pcs all over. The CRT has a dark black circle in the middle. Does not power on.....I am more mad because my daughter was thrilled when I came in with the box and then I opened it and saw the damage. I know the $$ will be refunded even if the seller fights me but I feel bad for my daughter. Now she has to wait for the refund, etc.
