Wife's lamp style iMac upgraded to 768 megs by the dealer at time of purchase and
has Applecare. Real problems now.

Machine has been plagued with hangups and errors since purchase but she
has been reluctant to bring it in for repair since then she'll be without a computer.

Last night she brought up Mail and received an error indicating there was a problem
with the index and it had to quit. When she brought it back up again, the e-mail
messages appeared to be there but when you clicked on them they brought up
completely different emails from a year or more ago with the wrong subject line.

To make matters worse, it still is hanging up and we came back from an errand
today to find the machine hung up. She rebooted it and it's sitting at the gray apple
with the round spinny thing rotating and it's been at least 10 minutes and still going.

Is the drive failing? Bad memory? I can't get into the system profiler or even get
the thing to boot to determine smart status.

Booted off the Tiger DVD-ROM and ran disk repair on the drive and it boots again.

It appears that any time processor utilization is 100% for any length of time the
thing just hangs up.

I ran temperature monitor and the thing sits at 113 degrees fahrenheit for hours,
idle. If I run any apps it still sits at 100%. I'll back out of temperature monitor
when CPU is at 100% and go back in and it still sits at 113.

Hmm. I still think it could be memory or hard drive. Ideas?

It sounds like bad memory. Most memory has a lifetime warrenty so take it back to Apple and they should install new memory,
