Have a friend that wanted me to post this for her son.
He is running a mini, I do not know which one or what version of OS X he
has. Says his number pad part of the keyboard stopped working. Rest of
the keyboard works fine. Said it stopped all of a sudden and was that
way for awhile and then started working again. Stopped again and is that
way now. Tried it on another machine and it worked OK. Do not know is he
has another keyboard to try on his mini to see what it does.
Wondering, is there a key command that he could have hit by accident
that would cause something like this?

after reading the original post twice, i dont see any reference to an apple keyboard. number lock is an easy frustration maker, its worth a shot.
