Hi...I just installed the Firmware update in order to use Boot Camp but I am also not sure what it does...Also if I ever erase my entire hard drive and reinstall macosx will I have to reinstall the firmware or it will be saved in the computer's memory like a BIOS does?

firmware is usually stored in a chip, not your hard drive. You should only have to install it once. What you do with your hard drive shouldn't affect anything.

Does anyone know if it does anything other than letting you load bootcamp?

Firmware is stored on a chip. All that the update did was allow you to be able to switch between Mac and Windows partitions at startup.

It's actually a BIOS shim on top of EFI, which would, in theory, allow you to load many old PC OSes.
