Try this method. I lost audio for Office, Snapz Pro X and Flash animations and this worked for them.
Run Gargage Band
Save empty GB file to your Desktop
Quit Garage Band
Reboot.
Let us kno what happens.

Hello...The problem you are having has nothing to do with Audacity or any other programs. it is a glitch that the Intel Macs have. Here's what you have to do...Open Macintosh HD then go to Applications-> Utilities->Audio Midi Setup->Properties For (on the drop menu choose BUILT IN OUTPUT-> Audio Output on Format Choose 48000 HZ instead of 96000Hz, now try again, it should work...

It's not a glitch with Intel Macs, it's something that can happen to ALL Macs. Basically if any program changes that setting (like Audacity) it can mess up the system audio.

First of all, there is no need to get all pissy about it, it was a comment. I used to have an iMac G5 and it never happened to it, also there is a lot of people experiencing the same problems with the new Intel Macs. As soon as I bought my Mac, I noticed that some website's audio weren't working, until I figured that the problem could have been in the MIDI Settings, so there it was...
