I bought and put in a 160GB Seagate HD into my G3 iMac. And now, it's been making noises....

As long as the hard drive isn't being accessed, it makes this weird sound like its indexing the HD. But I don't think it is because its a little bit softer than normal HDD access noise (not much though). Anyways, it'll make this "buzzing" sound for maybe a minute or two then stop for maybe 30 - 40 secs and then start again. It can be "interrupeted" by doing something that required HD access IE: starting a program...surfing though some web pages and what not.

I'm just not sure if this is normal for a seagate or if there is something wrong...

ideas?

My friends Seagate in his PowerMac is kinda noisy too, I think it is just a Seagate thing.

Seagate's drives aren't rated noticably louder than any other brand.

It sounds like it's resonating with some other part inside the case. Try mounting it with rubber gromets.

I second the rubber grommets idea. Besides that, I am not sure there is much to be done. The G3 iMac is a very quiet machine. The HDD is the only source of sound in mine, unless I am playing a DVD.

nah.....not external noise. (positive on that one)

My only guess is that its refilling the 8MB buffer. It'll grind/buzz for about 30/40 secs then stop for 1 or 2 minutes....then start again. So my only guess is that it has to refill that 8MB buffer.

I don't think anyone said external noise. We think the noise is coming from the internal hard drive. mduell suggested that you use rubber grommets to stop the hard drive's noise from resonating throughout the case. I threw in that the HDD is the only source of sound in an imac G3 anyways, unless you play a movie (or CD, presumably).

30-40 seconds would be a ridiculous amount of time to fill an 8MB buffer (0.25MBps!) and as far as I know most drives try to keep the buffer empty (so it can be used for write caching).

The behavior you've mentioned is rather odd, but I'd guess it's an OS/app issue rather than the hardware.
