Hello. I am a graduate student at the Munsell Color Science Laboratory at Rochester Institute of Technology. I am currently working on my thesis which involves two experiments. One of the experiments I am conducting over the internet and this is why I am reaching out to you now. I need your help in a few ways:
1) Please take my experiment. You can just follow the link to read about it and then participate. The good news for you is that it only takes 2-3 minutes to do and by completing it, you will automatically be entered into a drawing to win a free iPod!
2) Take the experiment again! Yes, you are encouraged to take the experiment as many times as you want (it will be different each time). Every time you complete it, you'll get another entry in the drawing for the iPod. Since it takes so little time to participate, you can do it once or twice every time you are at your computer!
3) Tell everyone you know about it! If you can forward this message (or just the link) to as many people as possible and ask them to participate, that would be appreciated. Be sure to tell them they might win an iPod and that it will only take a few minutes of their time.
4) Finally, when you forward this message, please encourage your family/friends to also forward this message to everyone that they know!
To reach the experiment, please go to this link:

Thanks so much for helping me out. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Seems more legit than most spam, but still, it's spam.

This is not spam! It is a real experiment for which I am inviting users to participate. The incentive is a drawing for a free iPod. I apologize if you view this as spam.

It is, technically, spam; you're providing incentive for people to participate in something that benefits you and may or may not benefit them. As Ω pointed out, however, you're not a typical spammer (the facts that you're from university, you've provided your full name, you've returned to answer us), and those moderating the boards may allow you to post this invitation—however, you really should private message them.
As far as pertinent boards to post this in, this section (and the iPod section) are for troubleshooting and general discussion; you're doing neither in these threads, so maybe the Lounge would have been a better place for this.

Regardless, because of the free iPod sites, we have to be very strict on these things. (When in doubt, ask first.)
Anyhow, spam or not, this isn't an iMac topic and does not belong here.
