Does anyone have the faintest idea as to when we'll see an intel eMac? Or will Apple finally kill it for good?

My money's on them abandoning it, but that's pure speculation on my part. There hasn't been a peep from the rumor mill in ages, and it's relegated to the bottom of the page at http://www.apple.com/hardware/ .

I imagine they figure most folks who'd to want an eMac can live with an iMac or a mini.

I very much doubt we will see one. There was no good reason Apple couldn't put a G5 into an emac a long time ago, but they didn't, they just left it as it was, so my moneys on them forgetting about it. They might keep it, but as it is, for a year or so, then finally kill it off

Well they *might* have it, cuz even tho emacs are not sold anymore, they will still be donated to schools.

eMacs aren't just given away to schools... they do have to pay for them, y'know. As slug said, anyone who needs an eMac can get by with a mac mini.

The eMac is long-dead. Apple don't 'do' CRT's any more.

IMO, a CRT-based, all-in-one version of the Mac Mini is still valuable in the K-12 education market. It's not like a school is going to buy 30 Mac Minis and then drop $800 each on another 30 Apple displays. It's just not competitive for the education market, compared to something like this Dell. And if the K-12 market has to buy separate, non-Apple displays to keep the Mac Mini affordable, then they will be very tempted to go for the kind of package deals that companies like Dell offer. An all-in-one design from Apple would be better at keeping schools entirely "in the fold," so to speak.

I suppose I shoulda remembered or at least searched/found the current thread before posting that other one on the AI rumor.

I realize now that when I was saying eMac customers could live with an iMac or mini, I wasn't thinking about education. Schools that want all-in-ones probably don't want iMacs because they're priced pretty high compared to eMacs, and really how many computer labs need iSights everywhere? minis might work for some schools, though if they're budget-minded, they've gotta find a separate source for displays, and some probably prefer to get the boxes and screens from the same place.

But I do think that if there's an eMac replacement, it will finally drop the CRT. While I wouldn't let piles of screaming brats near my iMac, I'm sure there's a way to make an LCD more rugged than this'un.
