Hey, does anyone know if the iMac G5 17" 2.0GHz PowerPC has 2 or 3 slots for ram? Did those kind came stock with 2 X 256 or 1 x 512 sticks? Also do you know if putting in additional ram voids the warranty. Also... if it does void the warranty... if I took it to the Apple Store and had one of the geniuses do it.... would it void it also?

Thanks

The machine has 2 RAM slots, that take full sized RAM. I cant say what config the RAM came in, but im pretty sure it will not void your warrenty, as Apple made the Rev A&B iMacs to be user servicable, hence the stunning design on the outside as well as the inside.

Mine came a single 512 stick in the top slot which I replaced with a Gig and added another Gig as well. Easily done, more or less, but be prepared to use a bit more force than usual to get them seated properly. I really had to shove mine in for them to work.

The newer iMacs (even the previous generation G5s) are fairly difficult to ge the RAM in compared to the models of a year ago!

I believe they ship now with the single stick configuration as the method of filling the slots was pretty unpopular for most anyone trying to upgrade (read: everyone!).

You might want to check on the warranty thing. I don't think installing RAM by yourself voids it. I think that you RAM isn't covered (obviously) and if it turns out that the RAM caused an issue, then it isn't covered. However, if something goes wrong independent of the RAM in the machine they won't pay any mind to the third party RAM.

My intel 1.83 Ghz core due had one 512 stick.
It is so much simple to upgrade RAM in intel iMacs compared to PPC ones where whole back had to be removed.
New iMacs have a similar feature to G3 iMacs with where RAm can be upgraded via a small door.

Cheers
