With a subject line such as yours, not many people are even going to look in here.

I would guess either the PRAM is corrupted or the backup battery is dead. Have you tried unplugging it for a few minutes and then plugging it back in? If your iMac has a reset button, you might try getting out a paper clip and pushing that.

See the iMac user manual for the location of the reset button http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iMa...UserManual.PDF

Could be a bad power supply

Possibly a dead flyback transformer. Common problem with old gumdrop iMacs.

by backup battery I assume you mean the PRAM battery

I have heard people talk about the main battery - is there another battery aside from the PRAM?

I don't think that its the flyback - as the machine shuts down completely (then upon second attempt to power on , nothing at all happens

normally with a flyback problem the machine powers up - the button glows orange but nothing comes up on the screen

I disagree. The startup then shut right down is indicative of a shorted flyback. The power supply is basically overloaded and shuts down. It may take a few seconds or minutes before you can attempt startup again. The second scenario you describe may be indicative of an open flyback or other failed monitor component.

Either way, the solution is too expensive to justify repairing. The best thing is to gut the mobo and try to stick it into a PC case to use it. Otherwise, gut it and make it a fish tank.
