Hello all. Nice forums you have here. I had a question. My old graphite G3 iMac died recently (the monitor) and I acquired a new G5 iMac (May 2005 version). I have removed the harddrive from the old machine, and am wondering what the easiest way to move the data from the old harddrive to the new machine would be. (I don't really feel like giving the local Apple store $50 to do it).

I am thinking 1) Put the old drive in an enclosure (prolly cost $40-50) 2) Hook up the old drive to the new machine via Firewire 400 cable (I believe both the old machine and the new machine were Firewire 400...not sure how an enclosure would work...and/or if it would matter). 3) Use the data migration feature of OSX to move the data.

What do you all think? I'd prolly end up spending slightly more to do it myself...but I would end up with a 40GB harddrive for storage out of it.

Oh, and I just HAVE to use this:
Never seen that one before!

Cheers!

If you had left the hd in the old iMac and have a firewire cable lying around, you could connect the two iMacs and boot the one with the dead monitor in firewire target mode by holding the 't' key at startup. The HD will mount on your new iMac just like a firewrie disk. But your enclosure idea is probably best, as you will get to keep using the old hd.

Using an enclosure is pretty much your only option. I don't know about using the migration assistant, though, since you probably have already started using the new iMac and have set up accounts, etc. The main purpose of the assistant is to duplicate your accounts, settings, and files, but you really only need to copy the files, so you can probably just do it in the finder.

The Migration assistant works just fine after the fact, provided there are no username conflicts.

Yes, but won't it add the users from his old computer to his new one? I see no need to do so.

Ah...good point. But users are easy enough to delete, no?

I guess this comes down to two things. FIrst, how long you've been using the new iMac (whether you have already set up a working system). Second, whether you just have files that you want to transfer (in which case a simple copy in the finder will do the trick) or if you have things like an iTunes music library, iPhoto library, etc to move over. Using the migration assistant does make things a lot easier for transferring these kinds of things, although I would assume they would be created for a new user on the iMac G5, which might complicate things for you.
