I have Core Duo Mini and a Panny TH37PD25U, with both VGA and HDMI (and I have a DVI to HDMI cable) connections.

My goals are:
- find a "dual purpose" resolution.. one that will work for video/media, and one that also provides enough "real estate" for things like browsing/email. I realize the EDTV doesn't have that many pixels and will look blurry.. but am willing to suffer that compromise.
- not use the VGA connection which is on the front the TV.

Over VGA I get options for resolutions up thru 1280x768 (I think).

Over DVI I only get 3 choices
640x480
720x480
1920x1280 (or 1200, I can't remember)

I've have made quick attempts with SwitchResX and DisplayConfigX over DVI without any luck. I picked some resolutions like 1366x768 and did get a picture... BUT it was basically the same resolution (ie. icons were the same size) as 720x480, which makes me think something was going exactly as planned... also the colors were washed out and the picture slightly offset (but as I said it certainly didn't seem like the resolution really had changed).

Thanks for any ideas,
Mike

Why are you trying to set it to 1366x768 when your TV is only 852x480?
Set the DVI output to 852x480 in SwitchResX and it should be perfect for both video (there's no sense in going to any other size) and mail (the pixels will map 1:1 from input to screen).

Re-read my bullet #1, there very much is a reason... it is easier to scale up beyond the natural resolution of the set and accept the picture degradation in order to get a usable screen resolution for surfing, etc. Yes it looks like @#%#@ but that is much more usable than 852x480. But try to convince the Mac OS to scale 1600x1200 of info down... in 4 years, when you figure it out, let me know

And FWIW I can't get 852x480 to work well either. 720x480 and 1280x768 are my best results so far.

So again, rather than invalidating the question, I'm looking for some answers. My reasoning is sound and am working with several others on AVS forums looking for the same answers.

Mike
