This is my first Intel Mac. Something strange I noticed is that when I go to the network control panel there are two extra ethernet adapters. Can someone tell me what they are?

Could be the two Firewire ports, since OSX supports IPoverIEEE1394.

Firewire would NOT show up as ethernet. It may want an IP, but it KNOWS it's firewire.
That's really puzzling, DH...

For the record it also showed up on my buddies MacBook Pro so it seems to be an Intel thing.
My friend guessed that it MIGHT have something to do with Parallels.

It showed up on my Intel mini as well. I removed it, powered down my modem, and it's running fine. But when it showed up, my connection was gone.

OS X allows multihoming (binding multiple IP addresses to one physical port). It's possible that for some reason it got configured that way. It should be possible to choose "Network port configuration" from the "Show:" menu and then delete the unwanted ports.

My Intel iMac doesn't do this, however it does show this when I click on the drop down menu: (note the bottom listing - similar sort of thing)

My Dual 2.5 G5 under "Network" preferences a drop down menu that reads:
Location: Automatic (Selection bar)
Show: Network Status
When I click on Network Status bar, I get a "Built-In Firewire" or "Built-In Ethernet" listed.
Also when I check my "Network Port Config" Firewire is listed.
As for the connections in the box, with IP's and dialogue (with corresponding green/yellow/red dots, I have only ethernet)

The vi2 Ethernet adaptor is created by Parallels.
