Twice now what I assume to be my hard drive has started making ominous clicking noises. I've always understood this to be a sign of failure so I made sure everything was backed up and just went about my business waiting for the inevitable. The thing is nothing has happened. The first time it happened was about a month, possibly even two months ago, the second time being yesterday. My computer is generally on somewhere in the neighbourhood of 16 hours a day and I figured "imminent failure" would happen a little quicker. Could it possibly be something else clicking inside? Both times it started when I was playing CDs and iTunes started getting really jumpy, playing for 30 seconds, freezing for 30 seconds. This last time I took the CD out and continued to run the computer for about 15 minutes, and the clicking lessened but still continued. Both times I ended up shutting down for an hour or so and everything was fine on start up. Any ideas?

I'm running an iMac G5, 2GHz.

Back up your stuff, just in case. You might give an Apple store a call, to see if they'll take it.

Definitely backup your harddrive now. Mine did this just before it failed. Once it failed it was still acessible, but it took 10 times the amount of time to backup my drive (50 GB took approxmately 10 hours). Took it to work, swapped the harddrive out and all was right in the world again.
