I have a PMG4 (AGP Graphics) and an Apple USB Keyboard with no power button. I know you can press Control-Command-Option-Eject to do a fast shutdown; is there an equivalent keyboard combination for startup?
I imagine that one reason there might not be is that the CPU has to be powered on for the keyboard to work and therefore only the built-in power key on the CPU will work, but ...

Good point. Anyone have any further insight?

I remember having a USB dongle to be put between keyboard and computer, and it could power on the machine. This was a Quicksilver, so I have no idea whether it would still work on a G5.
It all boils down to the question whether Apple still has the power-on trickle charge on the USB bus. If so, you can just get such a dongle, or a keyboard with power button (seen them manufactured for Macs).
Try your old keyboard, it can't hurt. (Or at least it shouldn't...)

Apple removed the circuitry that allowed USB keyboards to power up systems. Some claimed it was because USB power up was unreliable when keyboards were connected by way of certain USB hubs.

Yes, but after what model of Power Mac did that happen? Does this apply to my model? Is there a keyboard shortcut that will do it?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was eliminated at least by the G4s.

.................................
it's really not -that- hard to reach up (or down, depending where you put your CPU) to press the power button. I tell you.... someday, people are not gonna want to walk..... even to the restroom.

Nope. Most G4 models support it, certainly up to the QuickSilvers. I think the MDDs are the first that don't support it.

So my AGP Graphics G4 probably supports it, too. So do I have to get another keyboard, or is there a dongle I can purchase?

The dongle
http://www.welovemacs.com/usb-key-bt.html
And it looks like Tooki wins the lottery on what Macs support the Power Key on the Keyboard. If you read the compatibility info on the dongle on the page I linked to it says "Compatible with up to G4 Quicksilver machines & all USB Macs except iMac DV Summer 2000 or later, they do not have the ability to start from USB device. This does not work with G5 machines or Mirror Door." which suggests the circuitry was removed with the MDDs.

Not probably. Definitely.
That power button gadget is your best bet. Only the original small iMac style Apple USB keyboards have the power button on them.

Yup. The Apple Pro Keyboard -- the first Apple keyboard for Macs since 1987 to not have a power button -- debuted in July 2000. Before that, all USB Macs shipped with the small USB keyboard.

Several 3rd-party keyboards still ship with a power key, including my matias tactilepro. They'll cost more than adding the USB dongle of course.
