in anticipation of moving my iMac 400 up to OSX 10.3 (currently at 10.2.8), I just got a 256mb RAM module to bring my total up to 512mb. replaced the original factory 64 mb module with the new 256.

first experience was that it wouldn't boot properly. tried reseating the modules and switching them around. it would boot OK with the original 64 and the 256 that I've been using for years. the new 256 wouldn't work but then, after switching slots, I got it to boot.

but then I started getting application crashes & freezes. rebooted a couple times but it kept happening.

now I'm back on my original RAM, no crashes yet in this mode, and suspecting the new module is faulty. does that seem like a reasonable conclusion? I am presuming the retailer will take this module back and send me a new one, but I'd like to know the RAM is clearly the issue, if that's possible.

thanks - Roy

You could run the Apple Hardware Test disc (restart your system with the test disc in and follow the directions [usually holding down the D key]). It will run memory tests, with which you could then confirm if the module is indeed defective.

However, based on the symptoms you have described, it definitely sounds like a bad memory module to me. Go back and get an exchange ASAP.

Sure sounds like the RAM -- did you buy a module specifically for the iMac or is it a generic PC100 / PC133?

generic PC100 ... but it's now headed back to the supplier in favor of a samsung ("apple recommended") module.

thanks - Roy
