I'm thinking of getting a g3 imac. Is it hard to change the hard drive? Do I just need a screwdriver? (I've done this on a g4 desktop)

Not too difficult if you are careful enough - do a google (or search this forum as it comes up frequently) for something like 'iMac g3 hard drive upgrade' for guides. You may find a a pair of long nose pliers or tweezers useful as well to catch some of the screws which may drop inside otherwise.

Hi:

I agree, it is easy to change that hard drive. I have one too, but I am new to upgrading and repairing Imacs. I just put in a new hard drive in mine, and it was easy;however, there is a trick to getting it closed. You'll need a phillips screw driver. you will have to unscrew about 6 screws, detach the monitor cable and two cable connectors, one with wires, then plull from the top. Pull up and out. The hard drive is under the cd-rom drive
all snugged in it's carrier, similar to a basket. This reminds me of the early "all in one powermacs" that plull out, but they pull Straight out ,not up and out.

Opening up is the easy part, it's closing it up that's tricky, you have to make sure that the
wires on the left hand corner are pulled up and together, or you can rip one of them. I did this trying to get everything back in there. The cd-rom drive must line up and connect to it's connectors that stick up. And on each side of the large basket looking thing that houses everything, there are metel guides that curve, that must line up and go into their holes. It goes back in down and up. It's simple after you get the hang of it. I've opened mine up 4 times latley.

Hello, Will C:
I hate to ask about my Imac problems on another person's question, but
I see that you are a senior member and you give great advice.
I am new to repairing Imacs, I've repaired my powermac 5500 and others.
Well, I just replaced my hard drive in my Imac and it will not boot up from the hard-drive.
I know with scsi drives one could check the ID to see if two drives could be on the same ID. So could this apply with an ATA drive or is this something totally different. I also rane a FWB scan to see if it was mounted, and it is mounted ,but both are saying master. what does that mean?

Thanks,
Shirley Jones
