I need a new DVD burner for my Mac, and wondered if you had anyone you would recommend ? I want it to work with standard Apple apps, or easy to hack, without the hack being to dirty... Speed isn't the most important thing, but must support dual layer and most important it most be reliant.
My 103 burner is broken I think. It won't read burned dvd-r data discs, just commercial DVD's and dvd-r movie discs. Tried both with OS 9, Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4

XLR8YourMac has a great compendium of drives to consider in their drive database. Look there and see what others have to say.
The Pioneer 110 is the latest model to be formally supported by OSX. You can get it from OWC for $45.

I would rather compromise some speed and get native support… but a black bezel would be cooler

As of OSX 10.4.6, the Pioneer 110 is listed as "Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)". The Pioneer 111 is functional, yes, but is listed as "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)" through System Profiler. It'll probably work fine.
Here's the Pioneer 111D from Newegg (and in black, even!)

I just put a 111 in a friend's Dual G4 500 under Tiger 10.4.6 and it works perfectly.

Isn't it possible to use Patchburn or something to get it "Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)" ? But you would recommend Pioneer ? I've heard they break quite fast.
And, yes. Ofcourse it should be black

If you use Patchburn, I believe the line reads "Burn Support: Yes (Vendor Supported)". Like I said, it should work fine.
I've gone with Pioneers for quite some time and they haven't given me any problems. They also seem to be quite popular over at XLR8YourMac. Besides, didn't you say that your 103 just gave out? The 103 is a very old drive!

Yes. 103 has taken it place in /dev/null :/ Okay. I'll probably go for the 111D, since I couldn't find a 110D (or 110) in black in Norway.
