Dear members,

I know the existence of the virtual pc application, but I wonder, can't we get
a pc-windows on a pci or pci-x, pci-express card, an put it in our powerMac
G5 to get two systems?

A company called something like OrangePC used to make those, but that was back in the PII days if I'm not mistaken. Yes it's possible, no, it doesn't happen anymore.

The company that made those was Orange Micro, which is still around making peripherals.

The problem is that it cost more money to put a PC on a PCI card than it did to buy a whole standalone PC, including a display.

Exactly. They were somewhat expensive and underpowered. Just hide the dell under your desk.

If the mactel is not in your future, your next best bet then is a cheap pc. That's the only other option to running windows.

The OrangePC cards made by Orange Micro (Discontinued) were not compatable in the G5's. You need to run them on OS9 . The software was never upgraded to run on OSX. The one I have (orangePC 660) runs on a MDD G4 and does put VirtualPC to shame. I have it running on an AMD 550.

There was an OrangePC card compatible with the G4? Never heard of it.

Your best bet is to either
- buy an inexpensive PC if you don't need a lot horsepower running windows. or
- sell the G5 and buy a Mac Pro if you do. Either dual boot if you need GPU acceleration or run parallels if you don't.

The more cost effective option depends on what you'll be using windows for.

It's quite possible to build a PC for extremely cheap...I just put together a usable system on NewEgg for around $200...2.3GHz Celeron, 80gig HD, 512MB RAM, etc. Not a bad option if you need a basic PC. I built mine with a 2.6GHz P4 and 1GB of RAM for $300. I originally had the intention of overclocking it to 3.5+GHz but I didn't realize the mobo I got blocked overclocking...

I have a MDD dual 1gig (not FW800) and I am running my Orange Micro OrangePC 660 on it. I just have to boot in OS9 for it to work. I have been waiting and praying someone would convert the software to run on OSX. who knows maby someday.

P.S. you be seeing some on ebay once I finish testing the other 4 I have .
