Hey...

i'm still doing some considerations on buying an iMac
for the first part, i'm hoping to make it as potent as posible- so i wont lag while having a good machine.

So i thought RAM is the way to go (primarily)..... i was thinking of buying 1GB xtra ram (3rd party), for a grand total of 1.5 GB RAM.

so, what can i do with that, and most importantly- what CANT i do...... (NB: it will be a 17"er)

I'm receiving my memory tonight. If I remember I'll tell you how it goes.

It's exactly what you're doing -- 17" iMac with 512MB getting an additional GB of 3rd party RAM.

1 GB should do for most common applications. 512 is not enough for anything really (especially if you have integrated graphics like in the mac mini, or macbook). Apple really should start equiping the new macs with 1 GB standard.

So 1.5 will do you just fine as long as you're not using RAM hungry apps such as Apple's pro apps.

Well if you have any PPC apps, Rosetta gets mighty hungry too.

Its sad but the last time I saw as many bachballs and lag as the past 2 weeks I was on 10.1. Tiger is RAM hungry beast.

wait a sec.

interestingly enough, photoshop CS seems to work almost flawlessly on a eMac: G4 1.42Ghz, 256 RAM, ATi Radeon 9600 64 vRam

y should apple pro apps (universal) lag on a CoreDuo, 128 vRam, 1.5GB RAM ???
i want to use the maching for mundane tasks, light photoshoping (could use my G4 for tht) and iLife '06... i believe that should work

but what about gaming? and if i were to play via bootcamp ???
does any1 knw??

I didn't say apps would lag with 1.5 GB, I said it would be fine. As for games, they are known to suck back A LOT of RAM, so 2 GB would be well worth the money spent if you plan on playing a lot of games or use high end applications a lot.

Alright, I installed as soon as I got home yesterday. Probably the easiest I've done yet (G3 iMac & TiBook being the other 2). Booted and showed up immediately.

I noticed how snappy the iMac was right after boots before, but eventually it was slow up (most noticeable is the mouse was way zippier after a reboot than 4 days continuous use).

I used the iMac most of last night (6 hours) and I can't recall seeing a beach ball, even when I went into Photoshop (something that was occurring regularly). Dashboard is now almost lagless whereas it was a snail before,

My recommendation: Get the GB. It seems well worth it. I ordered my stick from NewEgg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145048)

It cost me about $155, but it looks like if you pick it up today you only have to spend $140. (And it comes in about 3 days).

Hope that helps.

People say it works just fine.

I won't speak for it. But I admit I was playing it safe by purchasing Crucial RAM.
