Can anyone tell me if moving an Imac carefully to another room (in the same house - upstairs - downstairs) after shutdown several times in a week is bad for this IMac? The Imac is not that heavy, but perhaps it's bad for its built-in monitor?

TIA

I can't pretend to actually know, but when I move mine around I make sure to grip both the lcd area and the base so there's no stress at the joint.

Carrying is not bad for it per se. But doing it so often increases the chances that you'll damage it by hitting it against something or dropping it.

Yeah, um, a MacBook Pro might have been a better choice!

I don't play games. I haven't bought an IMac yet. A Macbook is my second option for approx. the same price.
A MacBook Pro is too expensive.
But an Imac seems most bang for a buck. Faster harddrive, Dual layer DVD, 17 inch monitor. Runs cool.

Well you always get more bang for your buck from a desktop compared to a laptop. That's a given.

True, but the MacBooks are remarkably similar to the iMacs in most ways. Since he doesn't play games, the MacBook might be the better choice, and it's cheaper.

If you need the mobility, DEFINITELY get the MacBook. Hauling the iMac around WILL get old FAST.

It's not cheaper in Belgium. (currency conversion only with the release, plus VAT, import duties, transport, etc... and prices don't change afterwards with the fluctuation of the dollar)
MacBook 2.0 Ghz with 4x-superdrive and 100 GB harddisk and 1 GB RAM = Eur 1570 ( 2000 dollar)
Imac 1.8 Ghz with dual layer DVD superdrive and 160 GB harddisk and 1 GB RAM = Eur 1500 (1910 dollar)
The Imac's processor speed is a bit slower, but due to a faster graphics card and a faster harddisk it is at least as fast as the MacBook.

I don't care about the weight of the Imac. It's not that heavy...

However, if frequently moving the IMac (even only in the same house) is not recommended, I have to take the MacBook...

While on the phone one day with Apple support I asked the representative if moving the iMac by only gripping the base (that is, to say, the metal, upside-down shaped 7) was the intent of the design. His response indicated that the iMac was engineered for such activity.

Now, that isn't to say that the machine is built to withstand a serious jostling or extreme stressing of the joint area by forcing the LCD to pitch too far in one direction.

i've had enough of laptops

my pb 17 and icebook both ended up with broken keypads

with an imac you just swap the keyboard

with a portable it's a bloomin nightmare !
