Hi All,

The fans in my desktop G5 (dual 2.0GHz) seem to be spinning up a lot more than usual. I don't see a great increase in CPU activity when they do, and even their temperature is keeping below 50 degrees C (upper limit I believe is 60C).

Any idea what might be causing this? It's only been an issue for a week or so, before that I don't seem to remember the fans spinning up that much.

fyi: the room I am in is quite cool, I doubt that it's an ambient temperature thing. No new equipment has been installed inside the Mac, and I haven't moved it or anything.

Thanks in advance for any insights,

Chas

Have you tried restarting? There may have been a thermal issue at one point, which could cause the system to keep the fans on unnecessarily. A restart should cure it. Alternatively, if you've opened the case recently the plastic air flow insert may not be seated correctly. That would cause the fans to run at full blast. If you can't figure it out you may want to run the Apple Hardware Test CD to see what it reports.

Hey Big Mac,

Thanks for the reply. Good suggestion, as it turns out I hadn't restarted the machine for several days (haven't opened the case for ages, by the way). It's being quiet at the moment, but yesterday the fans were blowing quite loudly again for a little bit for what seems like no reason (at least it wasn't as sustained as when I wrote my post).

Regarding your signature, how come you think that this is a bad option? (this isn't a troll, I'm just curious). I'd prefer running Windows within the MacOS rather than dual-booting, but it's better than nothing (when I upgrade to an Macintel, I'll definitely be installing Windows to solve a long-standing printing problem I'm having)

Thanks again,

Chas
