Just bought a mac mini g4 - I like it! I am already looking to give it more beef as I start to take tasks away from my PC.

Here is my question:

my girlfriend has stock G4 ibook 1.42 with 512MB ram
I have stock G4 mac mini 1.42 with 512MB ram

Can I put my 512MB ram in the ibook, taking it to 1GB, and I buy myself a 1GB ram stick?

I believe I only have one slot. She has one spare?

What is the max ram I can get in the mac mini officially/unofficially?

Would I be able to upgrade myself?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

No can do dude. The iBook uses what is known as SODIMM RAM sticks, which are basically designed for laptops, and are small in size, and also more expensive. Desktops (including the mac mini) use standard DIMM RAM sticks, which are much larger than laptop RAM.

So, no you can't swap the RAM between the 2 machines. To answer your further questions (as they might come in useful one day):

Yes, you only have one RAM slot. Yes, the iBook G4 has 1 open RAM slot (it actually only has a total of 1 slot, the original 512 is on the motherboard and cannot be removed/replaced)

The max RAM in the mini is 1 GB

Yes, you can upgrade yourself, go to www.ifixit.com for details on how to open up the mini
iMac Core Duo 1.83 Ghz | 1.25GB RAM | 160HD, MacBook Core Duo 1.83 Ghz | 13.3" | 60HD | 1.0GB RAM

Hey HJ, thanks for the response.

I suppose it sounds a bit silly switching laptop & desktop components, but I had it in my head that the mini is just an ibook without the case.

Thanks for the link also. I like this link (taken from another post) http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_cente...directory.html

Will check memory prices.

Thanks for the info. Would 1GB feel different to 512MB in the mini?

1GB feels much better in any Mac running Mac OS X. 2GB is even better.
