I have an eMac that shuts off by itself. The monitor shimmers and shrinks and then it shuts off. Or it will shimmer and freeze. Then I have to restart.
It's an eMac 800 MHz, 60 Gig with a Superdrive. I bought it in Jan. of 2003.
I took it to an authorized Apple repair shop and they said there was nothing wrong with it.
The problem is intermittent.
I ran the computer for five hours yesterday and it was fine. Today when I started it up, it shut itself off twice when the desktop came up. First the monitor shimmered, shrank a few times and then it turned off.
Now it's working fine.

Sounds like the monitor is going bad. My friend's PowerMac G3's monitor did that before it died., but it didn't shut off the whole computer.

Sounds more like a logic board issue to me. Unfortunately, it also sounds like you're no longer covered by Applecare... which really sucks.

It started doing this right after it went out of warranty. Like a time bomb. Some days it works fine with no problem. Then other times it starts up and stops.
I asked one tech what he thought and he said if it's shutting down it's a power problem. He said the eMac will shut down if there is a power surge. He said it could be the power board.

jobethg,
I also think it is a logic board of power problem. I hope the last revision of eMacs don't have these types of problems later on in life. I don't really want to be plagued or bothered with the problems. I'm so happy that I bought applecare, I should be fine but people said bad things start happening to eMacs right after they're out of warranty so that is not good. Anyways, best of luck to you and I hope you can get your eMac fixed for no cost or a low cost since it's a good machine.
