I was wondering which upgrade I should get for my B&W G3 (I just got another B&W off of ebay for $110). 600MHz G4 for $200 or 1.1GHz G3 for $230? Is the G4 really worth it for 500MHz less?

Typically the G4 upgrades dock your bus speed on the B&W G3's (correct me if I'm wrong) so they run slower anyways. Definitely go with the G3.

My DayStar XLR8 MACH Speed runs at 600MHZ but leaves the bus speed on my PowerMac G3 Blue and white at 100mhz.

The G3 upgrade will be faster than the 600 MHz G4 upgrade. Do a search on this topic and you will see this has been discussed in detail already.

the older cpu upgrades, those 600mhz & lower, do not change the bus speed. The higher speed ones, 800mhz & above, do downclock the bus to 66mhz. It's a technical thing, but it still sux
If you use ALOT of Altivec-enabled apps, the G4 will outperform a G3 of the same clock speed, since that is the only REAL difference between the 2 chips.
If you use mainly older, non-altivec apps on that machine, go for the higher speed G3 in a heartbeat

So if I get the 1.1GHz G3, my bus speed will downclock to 66MHz? I don't think I use any software that uses AltiVec. If the 1.1GHz G3 does happen to downclock to 66MHz, which will be faster, the 600MHz G4 100MHz FSB or the 1.1GHz G3 66MHz? FSB

The G3 will have a 100MHz bus. The higher clocked G4 will have the 66MHz bus.
The 1.1GHz G3 will wipe the floor with the 600MHz G4 in non-Altivec apps. The G3 and G4 will basically run about the same when at the same clock speed.
I upgraded my brother's B&W with the 900MHz PowerLogix processor about a year ago. I had the choice of going with the G4 but the down-clocking to 66MHz just plain sucks. Also, some G4 upgrades require a firmware update which has the potential to screw your system and it requires OS 9 to apply.
