Question 1)

I just installed a bigger HD. Can I copy everything from the smaller one to the new one, and make the new one my primary? I'd like to load Linux on the 10gig and have OSX on the 120gig.

Question 2)

How do I change out the cd drive on this thing? It doesn't seem like I have enough room to remove it from the inside. Do I remove the front plate and take it out the front?

1) Of course you can copy it. Use Disk Utility (in the Utilities subfolder of /Applications).

2) Don't know

About the CD drive, yes, you remove it from the front.

There are two release latches for the bezel on the access door side. The bezel comes off for both optical & zip drives as one module. Locate the release latches and press gently inwards (towards the drives). Don't press too hard, the latches look breakable to me.

Once they release (the bezel can move forward on that side), pull that side of the bezel outwards. It will rotate against the other side. Note, there are latch nubs at top and bottom. As you push/pull the bezel forwards from the one side, the nubs should let go without anything breaking. Some gentle persuasion with a fingernail can help them come free.

Once the release tabs have come all the way through the front, you should be able to pull the bezel slightly away from the other side and the bezel assembly will come free. This gives front access to both bays.

ps - if in doubt, be gentle. If you break your bezel assembly, it's not my fault. But I have had mine out many times without incident.

So I can use disk utility to copy one drive to the other, then change the jumpers to make the new drive the master?

You should be using cable select (I think), but yeah that's the idea.

Cable Select was not supported on the PowerMac G4s until near the end. This model needs Master and Slave when using two drives on the same bus.

It is conventional to put the Master on the end of the cable, and the Slave on the mid-connector. However, even that is unlikely to matter on your Mac - I've had drives connected the other way in my Sawtooth before without issue.

For boot purposes, it doesn't matter which drive is Master. There's no need to move the drives around in order to make the new drive the Master - your Mac doesn't care. Just pick the new drive in Startup Disk and go.

after removing the bezel, there are 2 screws in the front plate that secure the drive(s) into the front panel. Remove them, pull the drives forward an inch or so, disconnect the data & power cables, and your home free

OK, so I use disk utility to copy my current boot drive (10gig) to new drive (120gig) and the load linux on 10gig and use startup disk to pick between osx and linux?
