I've got a PowerMac G5 with a Pioneer 107d drive - supposedly 24x CD-R and 8x DVD-R. However, Toast (6 & 7) only seem to allow me to burn at 4x for DVD (and I think CD-R might be slow, too).

I saw this article on Apple's boards (link) and at the very end there's a link to an article that sounds like precisely what I need... but it's dead! I tried Googling it for a cached copy, but couldn't get it.

Anyone have any ideas?

As a follow-up, I'd consider upgrading my optical drive to something even faster, if it's error-free. I updated the CD drive in my old PowerMac G4 and had all sorts of horrible headaches including kernel panics. I don't want a repeat of that experience.

Well, this drive was advertized as 8x DVD-R and 24x CD-R, so if it's any slower than that, it's a problem.

Are your DVD-Rs capable of being burned at 8x?

That would be my first guess as well. What is the rated speed of the media you are using and have you ever burned at full speed before with your current setup.

When I got this Mac, I had a stack of 4x media and I've been using those. But I got a deal on some Verbatim 16x media and bought it. When I tried using it, the "best" burning speed was still 4x.

Thanks for that link! How'd you get it? Did Apple move it or delete it?

Anyway, I have to agree with the posts on that site - upgrading firmware on Apple optical drives is a total PITA, and it shouldn't be. First of all, Apple should be providing this stuff to us for all stock drives via Software Update. Yeah, I know it's harder, but dammit, this is Apple we're talking about here. It should Just Work (tm). Second, I'm ticked off that standard Apple support is just 90 days and that AppleCare is so expensive. I should be able to get help from Apple on this for free. *Sigh*

Anyway...

I've got an eMac and I want to put a DVD drive in it so I can update it to Tiger. I'm thinking about upgrading the DVD-R drive in my PowerMac and putting the PM's optical drive in the eMac. (See link below)

to install Tiger on your eMac you could always firewire it on there.

I did a search for the topic to find the thread. I updated the firmware on my Pioneer DVD using
this link http://lasvegas.rpc1.org./

It was really easy and now the burner seems to work a lot better.

You mean launch it in target ("T") mode and install that way? I've done that with a laptop before and had weird results. Basically, the installer configured the OS install for the machine running the installer. It's like it looks at the machine's hardware and uses it on the target machine, too.

I find that Verbatim discs burn at full speed. I believe this is the brand that Apple also sells as their own.

NewEgg.com always has a good price on them.
