I have an old imac dv on which I install OS 10.3.9 Panther several weeks ago. I just learned about the Mac Disk Utility and how to repair permissions and the HD. So, I started up from the install CD and sucessfully repaired permissions but I clicked to repair the HD and get the RED messages. It says it can't repair the file directories or some such and the keys are out of order. I hate to spend $70 to $100 on another disc utility or the same price taking it into the shop. But to cut to the chase, this my seem like a dumb question to many but I was wondering if erasing the disc and doing a clean install would get rid of the problem? And maybe I should run the Mac Disk Utility more after that? Is this the best way to go outside of buying a mac mini? The computer seems to run fine exept when doing a search of the HD or even searching Mac Help it will sometimes stall.
Thanks for advise.

Have you done the firmware installation first on your imac in system 9.1 before proceeding to the 10.3.9 Panther installation?

I would think doing a clean install would fix the issue, assuming you don't have any critical data you don't want to lose.

If that doesn't work you may need a new drive. Small ones can be bought reasonably cheap (<30). Putting a drive in a DV is a bit tricky (I've done it twice) but not impossible. Just Google "iMac DV Hard Drive upgrade" or something along those lines.
