Hello,
I just bought a used iMac G5
specs:
2.0 GHz, 20" G5 iMac (not intel)
2 GB ram
wireless keyboard and mouse
2 yrs of Applecare left (1 yr old)
250 GB HD
I got it for $1400 (canadian)
I'm not sure if that's a good deal. Do you think it's risky NOT buying a new mac with the intel chip. I'm worried new programs won't be compatible with this unit in the next couple of years.
thanks
parmtree

I don't think it is a really good deal, I guess it is fine. Is it risky not buying an Intel Mac? No. Most programs are Universal, meaning PowerPC and Intel, and they won't be Intel only for many many years, if ever. By then your iMac would probably be quite old if it ever happens.

Buh?! I paid $2631 (canadian, with an education discount) for:
2.0 GHz, 20" Intel iMac
2 GB ram
wired keyboard and mouse
No Applecare
250 GB HD
How is he not getting a good deal? He's saving over a thousand dollars on something that really isn't that much worse then an Intel. Plus he gets applecare and a wireless set up.
Personally, I think it's a smokin deal!
And don't worry about apps. I remember even Microsoft signed a contract a few months back stating that they would support PPC in their Macintosh programs for another 5 years.

that seems to come to $1,260 US or so. considering the 2 gigabytes of ram and the applecare, i do not think it is such a bad deal at all. the memory would be a minumum of $200 to $250 and the applecare about $100 left fot the two years. that would bring the computer to about $960. sounds good to me.

if you are talking about any graphics applications like adobe suite... they will not have intel (universal software) versions for about another year. all other applications that have run on non intel should be fine for a few years.

Dude you got a ripoff on that iMac! You could get a 20 inch intel iMac with 2gb of RAM, 500Gb HD, 256mb graphics card, and Aperture preinstalled for $2,356.00 US, or $2618 Canadian.

I tend to disagree with you. He got a lot of software and it's a very nice machine. There is nothing wrong with the PowerPC platform and it will be supported for many years. Aside from that, I think there is a BIG difference between $1400 (Canadian) and $2631 (Canadian). He has a very nice machine that is no where near out of date!

I was actually refering to stefanicotine about the $2631 Canadian. It seems as if he paid a bit too much for his iMac to me. I think that parmtree's iMac was a fine deal, he didn't pay to much, but maybe could have found a better deal.

Consider, however, that the price indicated includes sales tax. I don't know what American tax is like, but in BC, Canada we have to pay 7% Provincial sales tax and another 7% for Government sales tax. According to the way you price things, I only paid around $2,307.
Also consider that I bought my iMac in late January, and going back that far you'll see the Canadian dollar wasn't worth as much as it is now.
And last but not least, I went to Apple.ca and checked off all the specifications you just listed:
- 20" Intel iMac
- 2 ghz
- 2 GB ram
- 256 MB video card
- 500 GB Hard Drive
- Aperture preinstalled
You say it comes out to $2,618 (Canadian), when in actuality, it comes out to $3,058 (Canadian). But we're not pricing things your way, we're pricing them mine (sales tax included). Add tax and you get?
1.14 x 3058 = $3,486.12
