Running Panther on my trusty B&W, runs great, but figured maybe Tiger would actually be faster, as I know sometimes thats how OS X upgrades work.

I guess I should mention this isn't any regual B&W.

PPC G3 750GX 1.1GHz Powerlogix upgrade
768MB RAM
40GB 7200RPM disk
ATI Radeon 7000

I have PCI Extreme installed, which enables Quartz Extreme on this machine, making the GUI very fluid.

Any thoughts on the upgrade with this hardware?

Well, for once, Safari would be much faster.

I would upgrade. The OS should feel about the same, but the upgraded applications would make it worth the time/money spent.

I would do an erase and install of it. It shouldn't slow down your machine that much, but you might want to max the RAM if it seems to slow after the install.

I just switched back to Panther as I lost my Tiger DVD on my iBook. The only thing I really miss is Spotlight and Automator, both of which I can live without. Safari doesn't feel any slower, although it's "supposed" to be.

No reason not to. 10.4 takes up more drive space, but that's about the only downside, other than the cost.

Ok thanks, looks like I'll be doing that sooner than later. I am in the process of adding RAM anyway to bring it up to the max of 1GB total.

I've seen going from Tiger to Panther increase overall performance by about 15%. (Xbench verified)
I'd recommend it, especially if you're thinking of keeping it for a while, as most new apps tend to be tiger only.
