Quick bit of background info....

iMac G5 20" is 6 weeks out of warranty and starts shutting itself down. Have had issues in the past with firewire not working, and was told to reset the PMU/SMU to fix the problem, but only happened a couple of times, and hardware test cd came back clean so didn't sent it in before the warranty ran out.

Now that the logic board is screwed I'm supposed to pay over £500 ($800) for a new one.... yeah right.... so on the phone to Apple.

Whilst I was on the phone to Apple they guy at tech support told me that it was my fault that the logic board was screwed, because I'd reset the PMU/SMU/AMU?! several times, and this has damaged the logic board.

I asked where it says this can happen and he told me that it is made clear on the instructions that this should be a last resort? (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733 - WHERE?!)

The only mention of it being a last resort is here (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300574) but that doesn't apply to my machine.

Was very disappointed that Apple were taking such cheap tactics as to blaming me for breaking my logic board, just to get out of paying for it.

After 45 mins on the phone, and talking to about 3 people, they finally admitted that because the FireWire issue had surfaced during warranty it WAS their fault, and they would pay for the part.

Still another example of how the build quality and customer support of apple has gone down hill in the last few years.

I hope no-one else has the same problems, and if you do.. try and get it done before the warranty runs out.

Adam
