Can't Connect - &^!@

I bought the firewire cable and connected both machines... I was told to hold down the 'T' button when starting up the G4... Nothing happens.

Could somebody help me please.

Turn off the G4, hold down T on the keyboard and keep it held down. Turn on the G4 and don't release the T-key until a Firewire symbol appears on the monitor of the G4. The G4 will than act as a external Firewire-harddrive for your G5.

If that does not work, define "nothing happens".

Also, make sure the G4's firmware is up to date. FireWire Target Disk Mode was not present on the earlier G4s.

What I mean by nothing happens... No Icon pops up. No message to take action. Nada.
Also, I did try holding down the T button, then starting up the G4, still not Icon or message.

I guess an old G4 Firmware could be the problem.

So "nothing happens" means that the G4 just booted up normally?

Or that "nothing happens", in which case the appropriate professional diagnosis would be, "Something's broken."

The Old G4 could have booted up normally, but since I don't see it on this monitor I can't confirm.
There have been no recent startup problems with the G4.
I do have a new system X that I could install on the G4. Would that cure the Firmware issue?

Firstly, check this out to know what kind of G4 Mac you have there:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58418

Another good resource would be the www.apple-history.com site and / or the free Mactracker application:

http://www.mactracker.ca/

Once you know what kind of G4 you have there, look for the suitable Firmware and apply it.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117-en

Scroll down until you find the ones aimed to Power Mac G4 models.

(Thank you for your help, because I still need it.)

Still no connection of my G4 to my G5.

I have updated the Firmware on my G4. I could not get the new system disc 10.4.3 to mount on the drive. I did do a reboot and held down the 'C' button. I could not get the new system disc to appear on the desktop.

After updating the Firmware, I did try to mound the firewire connnected G4 to my System 10.3.9 G5. I didn't get any notification or Icon appearing on the desktop. I did wait, holding the 'T' button for 4 minutes...

One though… which G4 mode is it?, could be than the first low level Power Mac G4 PCI Graphics -codenamed Yikes- were not able to boot from FireWire Target Disk Mode like happened with the Blue & White Power Mac G3, since such G4 were basically a Yosemite with a G4 CPU… could be that the issue here?

Using your link to identify which G4 i had, it is the "Digital Audio" version.
I used the corresponding Firmware for update.

Should I update the G4 to a higher system than 9.1, such as 9.?, then go to system X

Connect a monitor to the G4. Hold down the T. Tell us if they Firewire symbol displays.
