This may be a dumb question, but would a Core Solo Mini be slower than a G4 Mini with the same specs running DreamWeaver, Photoshop, Safari, etc, and while multitasking.

I'm thinking about getting a Core Solo Mini but I'm just worried about running all my apps and multitasking under Rosetta. If there was a G5 Mini, I'd be all over it, but there isn't, and I feel foolish getting a G4 Mini when I have a PowerBook already.

I plan on hooking this up to a 20" Apple display and using it for web design, lots of iTunes, watching DVDs, music videos, etc., converting videos for my iPod, multitasking with PS, DW, iTunes, Safari, MSN, etc. NO video editing and very light Photoshop work.

I'd like to get a Core Duo, or better yet a dual or quad G5, but I just can't afford it because I really want to get that 20" display and I want to keep my base cost around $1300. I thought about getting a 20" G5 iMac, and I still haven't ruled it out, but I love the idea of having that monitor and being able to sell it at a premium later on.

Also, could I upgrade the processor in the Core Solo if I went that route? Maybe to a Core Duo?

And of course I intend on having atleast 1gig RAM (I'll prolly max it out eventually). And I won't be doing ANY gaming on it.

Thanks!

Well since you say that you will be doing only light Photoshop work on it, I think the Core Solo should be fine. Also, CS3 is due by the first quarter of the next year, so if you can handle Rosetta until then, you should be fine. I don't think it makes sense buying a G4, when they have already switched over to Intels, cause that's the direction Apple is going to go in.

I'm not sure if you can upgrade the Core Solo, if it shares the same socket as the Duo it could be upgraded, but I'm not at all sure about that.

Have fun with your 20"!!

Do you have your heart set on an Apple Cinema Display? Dell make some very nice monitors -their 20" uses the same panel as Apples, slightly better IIRC, and its about 1/2 the price. This way you could get a Core Duo mini w/1-2GB RAM.

I would strongly reccommend you get the duo - the solo is basically a pentium M, which has been around for ages at higher clock speeds than the mini has - the solo is old technology, you are always best to get the newest stuff you can.

And if you want to run those heavy rosetta apps, you wll certainly need the extra horsepower (and a decent amount of RAM - at LEAST 1 GB)

why not get the 20" acd and hook it up with your powerbook till you could afford the computer you want?

i second the dell display. im a graphic design student and adore my 20" dell to bits, i have a 17" imac spanning onto it and just recently purchased a macbook pro, but it all started with my 12" powerbook hooked up to my 20" dell and that combination was more than enough for me to do anything on it. id start saving now and once adobe and the rest of your software becomes universal, then pounce on the machine that would then be in your price range (possibly a mac pro).
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

I forgot all about that. I'd like to keep everything Mac if at all possible. I hate mixing and matching brands when it comes to anything...just looks kinda tacky to me...even though it is cheaper and prolly the wiser choice. I'll have to think about it. Maybe I'll be able to score a good deal on an Apple display somewhere. And my PowerBook does have BlueTooth and AirPort, so I'll be able to get the wireless kb and mouse as I wanted to. I guess I'll have to think this over a bit more, lol. Either way, I'm definately going to have to get something with more balls and a bigger display than this 12" PB within the next few months.

Hmmm, maybe getting a BlackBook and getting the Dell LCD wouldn't be too bad. Plus I got the black iPod. That could look pretty bad ass. And I do get a company discount through Dell. Aaaaah, choices choices.

Apple cinema displays are a ripoff. Unless you're just SET on seeing that Apple logo on it (don't worry, I've felt the same way) then I would get something cheaper and better.

... but to kind of branch off of what sdilley14 wrote, how sluggish would DreamWeaver and CS2 run on an intel? (specically in my case, a gigaram BlackBook)?? thanks!

.... aaaaaand to edit this post one final time , I'm pretty sure you can upgrade the core solo the the core duo in the future... I'm pretty sure that's what I'll end up wanting for Christmas... an el-cheapo mini as a backup when my BlackBook is at my mom's house that I can gradually upgrade.

So how would the display look if I hooked my 12" PB with a 1024x768 native resolution to either an Apple 20" display or a Dell 2007FPW or something of the like. I didn't even think it was possible to run one of these displays with a 12" PB.

It really depends if one of your displays is a widescreen, because 1024x768 is not a widescreen resolution... 'tis more square-ish.

As long as you set the external display setup to screen spanning, and not mirroring, then your PB will run the display at its full native reolution (1680x1050 for the 20" I assume). This means you will have the PBs 1024x768, plus the full 1680x1050.

If you need to, for some reason, run the ext display in mirroring, ie you want to display the same thing on both screens, then the external screen will only go as high as the internal screen -ie 1024x768, and will look awful -but I don't see why you would have any need to do that
