Well I'm starting to get a little frustrated with Apple's optical drives. Out of the 7 Mac's I've owned 3 ended up with busted optical drives. First it was my first generation iBook, then it was my eMac and now my 2 GHz (G5) iMac is burning coasters left and right and having trouble reading disc. I tried calling Apple about it right before my warrant expired, but the only thing they tried to do to me was sell me Apple care and or a onetime fee for technical help, for which I didn't need.

Before anyone ask, I've tried different media and been down the cleaning the lens road before.
My question to you fine citizens are the following. Does anyone know which optical drive comes in the new iMac's? Any upgraded models that I should be looking at? If I wait a little bit, I might be able to get a BluRay, or HD external burner, but that's kind of cheesy.

Well, I just bought the Pioneer DVR-111 inter drive to replace the dead burner in my 1.8 G5, but I'll be damned if I can get the old one out!!!! It will not budge! So, I think your best bet would be to open yours up, move the two levers facing you and just see if you can even get yours out.

If not, get an external firewire burner.
