I got a used Mac Mini for my birthday. I used my OS 10.4 DVD to wipe and reload the operating system. All was fine through the setup. Then I got the spinning beach ball. I looked this up in the apple forums and saw that it was probably indexing, so I left it. Well, 3 hours later, it was still spinning, and a thunderstorm had rolled into our area. Our electricity blinked, and the Mac went down.
So today I turn it on, and I get the horrid folder with a question mark. I thought I would just start over, and reload 10.4 again, but I can't get the disc to go in the slot. Does anyone have any advice, either to get past the ?, or to get it to accept a disc? I can shove it all the way in, but the drive won't suck it in.
Thanks,
JoAnne

Try resetting the pram - start up the mini and hold down CMD+OPTION+P+R
Also, what type of Mini do you have?
It sounds like you may have problems with your hard drive.

I tried resetting the PRAM - I'm not sure if it helped, because I still couldn't get it to do anything. So I started shoving the disc in, over and over, until all of sudden, it sucked it in. So i reloaded 10.4, and everything seemed to be fine - until I ejected the installation disc. Then I got the spinning beach ball, which started all my problems. Anyway, it's working fine, as long as I don't eject the DVD. I've restarted it, making sure that the hard drive is chosen as the startup disc.
It's a Mac Mini 1.42GHz
Thanks!

Sounds like a dud optical drive to me. You could either;
a) send it to Apple to get it fixed,
b) assume its the optical drive thats messing everything up and either
(i) replace it yourself, or
(ii) buy an external optical drive and just use that.

I agree that the optical drive is going. I kept shoving the disc in over and over, until finally the mechanism took it in. I was able to reload 10.4, but the drive was making ugly noises the whole time. So i'll be looking into a new one eventually - but for right now, it's enough that I got the mini going.
Thanks
