I got my new iMac today, and it was working fine all day, I transfered all my stuff accross from my iBook and all was fine. I put my iMac to sleep and went out for a few hours, and when I returned, my screen has gone really bright, with thin lines going across horizontally. I tried restarting the iMac but it didn't resolve the issue.

I waited a long time for this computer to ship (over a month), and I really need it for uni work, and don't have the time to replace it.

Anyone know what could be wrong?

Someone replaced your LCD with one of Sony's CRTs?

What else have you tried? Calibrating the display? adjusting the brightness?

I've tried that. It does nothing. It's almost like the screen is pinstriped horizontally.

edit: I have also now noticed that there is slight burn in (or image persistance). I dont see how that would affect the entire screen so uniformly though (with these fine white lines).

There's a problem with your screen. Take it to an Apple Store if possible, otherwise call Apple Support.
