I went to the Apple store about a month ago with my wife, who is a teaching assistant and gets the educational discount. I was trying to decide which model to get, and I finally settled on the Mini with an Apple Studio display. As we were checking out he says, hey you get a free Nano with this, because your educational purchaser. Great! I got home, sent in the rebate promptly, and yesterday I got a letter, it was DENIED, the Mini is not covered. Well, I dont remember that being mentioned previously in any rebate form, by the sales person, or online when I submitted and printed my rebate form, it was all ok. Now it looks like the form has been updated to mention the Mini as not being part of the deal. What are my options, besides just keeping the Nano I paid for? Its not that big of a deal, but it is $200 I would not have spent.

go back to the store where you purchased it and find the guy who told you that the nano would be free and let the manager know about it. $200 that you probably wouldnt have spent is a substantial amount and i would think you'd get some sort of compensation in a form of free nano tubes or something. id take it back and demand a cash return for the full price, i cant stand ignorant sales people. oh, and as far as i remember, the mini has never been part of the free ipod promotion due to its cheap price as opposed to other apple computers.

The original rebate form can be considered a contract, updated or not. Call the store and try to get them to take it ALL back with no restocking fee. Threaten to post it all over the internet and sue Apple. Or something.

A while back I purchased a PowerMac G5 and 23" Cinema Display (this was right before they discontinued the clear plastic displays). At that time they were offering a $500 rebate if you bought both together, so I did. The rebate form said the rebate was only $300 if you purchased with an Educational discount. I purchased with an Apple-approved discount through my employer and sent in the rebate. I recieved a check for $300. I complained, they told me the terms of the rebate indicated full retail price must be paid for full rebate, I said why don't you read it right now, they said OK we'll send you another check for $200.
In short, complain and you will probably get your rebate, especially if the original rebate form didn't mention the mini wasn't applicable even though the salesperson told you it was.
