Hello,

Today I installed a Pioneer 111d in my Powermac G5 1.8DP. I have burned successfully in iTunes, Toast and iDVD. At first, it said couldn't find preferred burner, use Pioneer? and I said yes. Since then, everything seems to be ok. The profiler for 10.4.7 says:

PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D:

Firmware Revision: 1.19
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)
Profile Path: None
Cache: 2000 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media:
Media Type: DVD+R
Blank: Yes
Erasable: No
Overwritable: Yes
Appendable: Yes

Do I need to use Patchburn to get the vendor supported message next to burn support and a profile path? Will I have issues later on if this is not done? I will not be able to burn DL DVDs until I upgrade to iDVD 6?

I ran Patchburn on a secondary drive with Panther and got the Vendor supported message.

Just want to know if it is installed correctly.

Thanks,
Chris

I thought the 111D did DVD-RAM too.

I read that the 111 does DVD-RAM, but that the 111-d is flashed so that it doesn't.

It is installed correctly. That Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported) message reffers to that Apple didn't test this burner model.

BTW, I have the same Pionner model installed in my MDD G4, and as you said, I got it working flawless with no need of additional drivers.

Is it true that I must have iLife 06 to burn Dual Layer DVDs?

Thanks,
Chris

As opposed to what? iLife '05? Other third party software like Toast?

Yes. I have iDVD 5.0.1 and I thought I remember seeing that you must upgrade to iLife 06 to get iDVD upgraded also to have the capability to burn dual layer DVDs. Is that true?

Thanks,
Chris

From the iDVD page for the current version:

"Talent to burn

When you’re ready to burn your DVD, iDVD is ready, too. Even if you’re using a third-party DVD burner. iDVD has built-in support for a wide variety of DVD media formats — including DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R DL. So now you have more options than ever."
