I would reinstall Tiger and then see if the problem persists.

Hmmm. I don't know. After installing Tiger did you do all the available updates through the Software Updater? Also, was it a clean install?

Whoops. Connect the iMac G4 via Firewire to your other Mac, then reboot and hold down the T key. Insert your Tiger disk into other Mac and choose your iMac G4's HD to install it on. Do an erase and install.

It could be a problem with the Tiger installation, or it could be a bad combo drive, you will know for sure once it is done. I certainly wouldn't want to buy a new combo drive though if it was a software issue
