At work, got nothing to do. Why not post a new thread at MacNN!
Sooo, with iTunes being as big as it is. The addition to TV Shows and hopefully HD Movies, why not video games? Say Apple decided to upgrade the Mac Mini, giving the new Mini specs like xBox 360 or soon coming PS3. They could possibly have a 500gb HDD built in, because we know todays HD games aren't a few MBs. In result to being able to download the games from iTunes, the price of the game will be less. Due to the fact that there will be no physical media, no fancy packaging, and shipment to retail stores won't be needed (gas prices these days!). Apple could come out with their own line of video games. Using new Intel chipset and Front Row. Maybe even bring back IBM for their "cell" chipset used in PS3.
Say a game is 50GBs (double layer blu-ray disc used in PS3), that would equal 10 games. Ok, not that great, but with the new Blu-ray drive that just came out, why can't we burn them ourselves onto a disc? Not to metion we could aways expand our storage.
50GBs! That would take hours. If so, remember the times when broadband was unknown and Napster was still free? I can recall selecting a few songs before heading to bed. Then magicly waking to a batch of new songs on my computer. And you can't tell me Apple doesn't have something in the works for fast downloads of HD Movies on iTunes already, this would just add to Apples stock that I have invested a little bit of money into.
Either way, movies is a great idea for iTunes. But think how games would change this industry. You've already got places to download music, some companies are beginning to sell movies to download. But who has game downloads? If Apple built their own gaming system like MS did, who thinks it would fail?

Realistically I think it would flop. Who would they hire to be their main developer? Xbox has mostly Microsoft games, Sony has mostly EA games, and Nintendo has, well, mostly Nintendo games. Sure they could hire Blizzard or Aspyr, but we need a broader range of games then that (And let's face it, Aspyr is horrible at making ports of their games. They port until it works, not until it works well. Blizzard does a good job though.)
But that's just software, I think Apple would do amazingly well with hardware. It would be attractive, and like most Apple products, it would just work. It would be small, elegant, have absolutely no buttons or ports, and of course, you could choose between white, black, and U2! Haha
Another thing I think would flop is the name. Apple isn't the most creative when it comes to naming their products. They'd probably call it the iConsole, iArcade, iPlay (that's kinda cool I guess), iStation, iBox, iCube, iWii, haha...
It just pains me to think of an Apple console that only lets you play 3D Mahjong or Aqua Chess.
Cool idea though.
And iTunes offering games? I like the idea but it doesn't seem to suit iTunes. Maybe if there was a partner app called something else. Something that worked seemlessly with iTunes but offered different downloads. Why stop at games? iTunes could be the hub of your media downloads (songs, movies, pictures, books), and iProgs (or something along that line) could offer your games, software, etc. Imagine being able to buy any software you wanted straight from an app like iTunes. Every developer, every program, all at your finger tips.
Nice idea, F*ckDell
