Does anyone know what the exact make and model drive is in the new Mac Pro?
And what's the deal with Blu-Ray?

The optical drive is a Sony DW-D150A (as seen in the PowerMax takeapart). Blu-Ray drives for computers are still a ways off from being affordable. They're still around $900/drive currently. I'd expect to see them available within the next 6 months, though. Possibly as a BTO option on rev. B and standard on a future revision.

It's hard to say what optical drive you're going to get in the Mac Pro, generally Apple uses any drive from Sony, Pioneer, LG and Matsushita that meets their specs. You could get any one of these. There is no guarantee you'll get a specific model.

are you sure? i thought the SuperDrive was always Pioneer in previous models. the replacement service part is a Pioneer.
edit: I misread Leonard's post. I thought he was referring to previous SuperDrives; I'd only seen the one picture of the Sony drive PowerMax got so he's probably right about the Mac Pro drives.

My Mac Pro has a Pioneer DVR-111D. I'm happy, I prefer Pioneer over sony.

I'm basing this on the drives they've used in Power Macs, they've used multiple optical drive manufacturers in the past, even on the same model, there is no reason to believe they won't with the Mac Pro.
