Presently I own a Dual Core 2.0 w/ 2.5gb ram, 250gb hd and a 6600 256mb ram (love it). The Mac Pro really interests me, mostly becuase of the dual boot options. I have a friend who is willing to purchase my G5 from me, but do you think the jump to a MP is really worth it? Typically I am not one to jump into the REV A releases but at the same time I would get the most amount of money back for the G5. Any thoughts? Thanks.

well, what do you use the machine for? apple's pro apps are universal, so they'll be considerably faster on the Mac Pro. Adobe's Creative Suite, on the other hand, is not universal, so you probably won't see much of a difference between a quad xeon and a dual G5 until CS3 comes out. If you need to dual boot, though, that may be enough to warrant the switch either way

I would just keep the Power Mac G5, although I can see wanting dual-booting. Your Power Mac is a plenty competent machine, I would just keep what is good.

Yeah, it depends on what you're using it for. But I'm told the new quad-core machines absolutely destroy dual-core G5s, so if your stuff is universal, I'd say upgrading is not a bad idea.

Not everything I use is universal (Adobe), right now I am a system admin for a marketing company, so a lot of work with Indesign and photoshop (who knows when they wil go universal). However, I also do some work in Filemaker (now Universal) and I support a lot of servers (some sun servers) so I run ubuntu at work/home as well. Honestly I don't know what to do, I am almost tempted to just sell my G5 and wait a bit for a core 2 duo macbook pro (at least its a Rev B). But like i said, dual/multiple boot is very tempting. I also just love my G5...

Just because not all apps are universal doesn't mean that they are unusable under Rosetta...

Very true, I would expect some of the apps to run pretty good on the 3GHz beast.

So I decided to just stitck w/ my dual core g5. I've always been wary of Rev. A machines and even with the money i get from the G5 I'd still have to throw down an additional $1000 when its all said an done. Guess I will just wait for the Rev B Macbook Pros.....

Get the Mac Pro. I HATE when people bitch about the slow speed of Adobe products on Intel Processors. A year ago, they would have KILLED to have that speed!!!

I'm not bitching, I simply realized that the machine I own is more than enough for what I need at home. As well I just paid off all of my debt, I don't want to put myself back into it. At work I'm getting a Mac Pro 2..66 w/ 2gb ram, so I'll just have to enjoy it during the day...
