I have a G4 powermac with a dual 1.33Ghz processorupgrade (my friend fixed it for me), a LaCie BiggerDisk 1Tb and several external drives that are scattered out over my room. I now use a fan to cool the Biggerdisk (as it overheats too easy).
I always have the hood of the G4 open so let fresh air in (it contains 4 x 7200rpm drives) the processor has it's own fan.

I know the solutions to cool a mainframes, but that's too expensive.
So how can I keep everything cooled down? I was thinking about a box with fans on the front and aft to have some sort of air circulation

Though it's pretty unlikely, I would not leave my G4 open. There is potential for (somehow) transferrance of static electricity, which could zap your ram (and not in the good way).

Zap your RAM, I would be more worried about zapping myself!

Computers are designed to be run closed. Fans are placed to draw air in one side of the machine, over hot components, and out the back. When you open the side of the computer, it negates most of the effect of the fan, as they're just sucking air from wherever that may or may not be passing over the right places. This is why the G5 tower has the clear plastic inner door... Apple recognized how cool they are inside and that people might want to run them with the side open, so the plastic door allows people to do that without disturbing the airflow.

Just get an additional 80 mm cooling fan, they are not expensive, 5-20 Euros, depending on the model (I would suggest Pabst or Zalman) … you shouldn't run your computer like that.
