Anyone have any idea if the X1900XT will be available later to add in addition to the nVidia GPU? Just based on prior experience…
This will be my first desktop since 2002, so I am not sure what historical trends have been.
Thanks

You can't put an Nvidia GPU and an ATI GPU in the computer at the same time.
Hope this helps.

I think in time it may be available but if I were to hazard a guess that its only going to be available for oem sales initially. How long that period is, is anybodies guess.
I toyed with that idea in that I didn't want to wait for the Mac pro, and my desire for instant gratification was quite powerfull but in the end, I figured its better to buy the MacPro with the ATI card already installed.

Apple is currently selling the X1900 XT upgrade kit on their website, with a lead time of three to five weeks, for $499. Eventually, Apple Retail Stores, possibly CompUSA and Micro Center, should stock a couple of the upgrade kits. I remember specifically seeing 6800GT DDL upgrade kits at Micro Center and the Apple Retail Store in our local area back when G5's were still AGP. I even remember CompUSA carrying the Ti4200 upgrade kit for MDD G4 towers!

It will be possible to put an X1900XT in later (for an additional $500), but you can't mix ATI and Nvidia GPUs.

FOR the record, I did a press interview with Apple reps on Wednesday, including the product manager for the Mac Pro, and he said that the X1900 would be shipping considerably sooner than Apple's 3-5 week estimate.
Also, one other nice piece of news: I saw a 3.0GHz machine with the X1900 installed, and it was MUCH quiter than the nvidia 7800 that ships as the BTO option in the Quad G5. Apparently, the Mac Pro has more control of the X1900 cooling system than previous machines did. I was really impressed with how quiet a 3.0 GHZ/x1900 machine sounded, with 4 internal hard drives spinning.

I cannot see how that is going to happen. My order is going on two weeks. If it ships next week great, but I'm getting my hopes up. short of that it will either ship in the estimated time frame or be late.

That would be the first time in history that Apple overestimated time to ship, wouldn't it? I saw "3-5 weeks" and read "October."

Actually, no. I think they tend to overestimate ship times for new products.

Definetaly. For all of you out there with your 3 to 5 week ship times, expect your Mac Pro on your doorstep by September 10th.

My MacPro ship estimate was 1-3 days (ordered as soon as I could). It took 3 days. Always expect the longest time.

To be determined later.

People tend to get what they expect, so i'd rather expect it to ship sooner.
It's different when it's a 1-3 day shipping estimate, than when it's a 3-4 week one.

My estimated ship date for my MacBook was 7-10 days. I received it the very next day, in Singapore.

The important part is that now they are offering this as an option for the Mac Pro. If you wanted an upgraded PCIe video card for the G5, they would only sell it as a spare part, so even the 7800GT ended up being $700.
They will probably get the cards shipped out as soon as ATI puts the finishing touch on the ROM. These cards are just the same as the OEM PC version that Foxconn manufacturers.

The new ATI cards are the same as their PC cards? Right down to the ROM size? If that's the case, bring on the cheap, flashed graphics cards!

Is there a specific reason why nVidia and ATi can't be mixed? Is this a PCIe thing? I ask because my MDD G4 has an nVidia GeForce4 Ti in the AGP and an ATi Radeon 7000 in the PCI slot. No issues there and I have been running it like that for three years. (Currently running OS X 10.4.7)

The news that ATi and nVidia cards might not mix comes from a tech note I ran across. I posted a thread about it here.
Everything is speculation based on that note. It would be interesting if someone tried plugging both in, and see what happens. Maybe they both run smoothly, maybe one acts weird, maybe the MacPro won't boot until one is removed. I don't know.
