I haven't had any luck finding out the codename for my soon-to-arrive iMac Core Duo 20". Has Apple stopped giving hardware models these names (e.g., Pismo, Lombard, etc.)?
It looks like you could stick an aftermarket Meron processor in the ZIF slot of this thing, too (replacing the Yonah). Not something I would do right now, but a year or two from now that sounds like a nice way to give your iMac some more life.

Is there an echo in here? I asked if Apple had stopped putting codenames on systems, not chips. I also stated, as you did, that you can replace the Yonah chip with a Merom. I'm sorry if I was unclear somehow.

I have never known apple to put code names on a system. Is imac not good enough?
Perhaps I just don't understand why a codename is important.

According to Apple's site, the code-name for your mac would be :
iMac (Intel Core Duo)
Cool huh?

"Model name" and codename are not the same, folks. For example, the laptop whose model name was "PowerBook G3 (Bronze Keyboard)" was codenamed the Lombard and the "PowerBook (FireWire)" was called the Pismo. BTW, I always pronounced the latter "PEAS-mo" (a quasi-Spanish pronunciation) but I don't know if that's right.
It was a handy way of referring to different models in shorthand. Why it matters, I can't tell you. But it's interesting trivia, at least to me. And the codenames are shorter. Plus they lend interest and character. Folks wonder how they got the name. Maybe it'll end up in a computer-themed expansion pack for Trivial Pursuit someday.
So the "iMac (Core Duo)" ought to be codenamed ... something.

I was being a smartass. Geez, have a sense of humour.
Obviously they don't code-name them anymore.

Hard to hear tone in text. Anyway, how was I supposed to know you weren't an ignoramus? Anyway, joke's on me.

A 'wink' emoticon usually signals a post is made in jest.

Fair enough. My bad. And I have no doubt that Jesus loves gays. The corollary to that, of course, is that G-d definitely loves them, too.

I don't think Macs these days have codenames. Nicknames, however, are a different story. I've named my iMac "Speedy Gonzalinator".

Bummer. I wanted to say something like "I was working on my Ellison Mac the other day."

They usually have codenames like "Q34D", but we don't necessarily know them. No reason to, when they're that boring. It was better when they were called Kihei and Sawtooth and whatever.
