I used to make fun of those guys who would be contemplating the purchase of a new system and ask, "Should I wait? Should I wait?" I used to be one of those that said, "Of course not. There will always be upgrades. If you adopt a policy of waiting, you'll never get a new Mac and you'll find yourself in a state of paralysis."

Me and my big mouth. Now I'm stricken!

I just ordered a brand-new iMac Core Duo 20" and I keep fretting that Apple's going to release a new system next Tuesday (and my machine will ship Monday, of course).

What is Apple's policy in this regard? Is there a cutoff date?

Apple will price match within 14 days of the day you receive the computer. I've gotten them to give me 50% of the difference as late as 30 days after the fact, but the policy is 14 days.

Edit: I'm sorry, the policy is 10 days. You must contact them within 14 days.

Sales and Refunds Policy

I can tell you from personal experience this policy is flexible. When Apple reduced the price of the 20" iMac's 500 GB hard drive upgrade from $300 to $200, I called them (it was a month after I received the computer) and they gave me $50 back. So it's not set in stone.

Good to know, but I don't care as much about getting a few bucks back as I do about getting the best possible system for the money. If I spend $1,699 on an iMac, then Apple comes out with a new model with better specs for the same money a week later, I don't really care if they send me $50 or $100, although it's nice.

How did you miss the signs that Apple will most likely update the iMacs and minis? I mean, it's not that far in the future that you could have waited a few more weeks. You know that they'll most likely be Core 2 Duos and you'll be mad at yourself.

I know, I know. Too late now, it's a BTO. Well, at least the processor is a ZIF, so I could upgrade later to the Core 2 Duo. Sure it will cost me a few more hundred than it would have had I waited for the new model, I guess. But, as soon as my boss approved the purchase I got all excited and placed the order even though, had I thought about it, I would have realized the product line was due for another retrofit. *Sigh*

EDIT: Now that my machine has arrived, I am in the perverse position of hoping the new iMacs come out by next Tuesday so I can call Apple and request some kind of consideration (assuming there willl be a price drop).
