hard to tell if thisis a hardware or software issue so i posted it here as it relates to my new MacPro

If I connect my MacPro to my G4Dual via firewire and want the MP to be the target mode, on the G4 i get two sindows, as I have two HDs in the MP:

disk not recognized, do you want to initializa, ejct o quit

the taget mode works the otherway around.

G4 us running 10.3.9

a macbook with 10.4 targgets to the G4, but with variable success

any ideas?

cheers

10.3.9 probably can't understand the GUID partition tables, assuming that is what you used on the Mac Pro hard drives.

Don't both need to be running 10.4 if you want to use Target Disk Mode?

well the additional information that a new MacBook targets to the G4

don't know if that is GUID

don't even know what GUID so will have to look up any ref?

when the G4 asks me to initialize the HD from the Pro if I say yes will that erase or alter the HD in the Pro?

thanks

Don't say yes, it will alter and erase the hard drives in question. Apple historically uses an Apple Partition Map to format hard drives. But since the switch to Intel, Intel's chipsets apparently can't read those during bootup. For internal boot drives, Apple went to GUID partition tables. External and non-boot drives can still be formatted as Apple Partition Map.

Disk Utility in 10.4 has been updated to recognize and work with GUID-formatted HDs. 10.3 predates this formatting change.
