I just got my Mac Pro tonight... I'm incredibly excited...
I've just noticed one thing. Most of the computer's operation is whisper silent, but then I put in a CD or DVD and BAM. Something spins up. I'm not sure if it's a fan or the drive itself, but it's pretty loud.
Is this normal? I want to make sure my new baby is in flawless condition.
Cheers!!!

That's nothing to worry about, that's the CD or DVD in the drive spinning. It's quite a bit louder since the front is perforated, it's probably the loudest sound you'll hear.
Congrats BTW, what configuration did you get?

Yes, that's normal. With todays 52x CD and 16x DVD speeds, these drives are spinning almost as fast as some power tools. Even on notebooks, th noisiest part of the computer is the CD/DVD drive.

Same here...I have to watch the light to see if its pulsing to know if the machine is running of sleeping!
On a side note, the slide-down portion of the case where the SuperDrive is sticks down. :-(
I can coax it back into position, but the next time I eject the tray, it sticks down again.
I haven't had a chance to do much with it yet (had the machine 2 days). Do you think it could be something as simple as a screw being too tight, or something more problematic? The machine itself is GREAT, just this TINY issue.

Too many Apple/Mac products to even bother listing!

I wasn't sure. I thought maybe the fan on the optical drive wasn't properly aligned or something causing it to hum. but if it's normal...
My box is like the standard, except I upgraded the CPU to 3.0GHz and downgraded the HD to 160GB. I figure that I can (if and/or when I decide I need it) purchase a 250GB HD for about what I saved by downgrading to the 160GB, and then I'll have an extra 160GB. Same goes for most of the rest.
Overall, the thing that's worst is that I have to use it with a crappy old CRT (1280x1024, so, maybe not THAT crappy and old, but still big, clunky, and ugly, and not the best resolution) that we had lying around, since I can't afford to spend 3000 bucks on a computer and THEN another several hundred on a nice LCD. Ideally I'd like to get a 30 inch cinema display, but that's still a couple years savings away.

Kind of like buying a Mustang 5.0 SHO with Big 40 series rubber and then going with cheap vinyl seats.
